The West Coast is where Cape Town goes to slow down. North of the city, it's fishing villages, wide-open skies, and beaches where you might be the only one there. Langebaan's lagoon is ridiculously pretty, shallow turquoise water, warm enough to wade in, pelicans doing flybys. Paternoster is whitewashed cottages and fresh seafood. In between, not much except space and quiet. A camper trip here is all about the pace: slow mornings, long afternoons on empty sand, braai smoke drifting across the campsite while the sun goes down. In spring (August-September), the Namaqualand section fills with wildflowers, it's worth timing your trip for it. The West Coast is just an hour from Cape Town, which makes it an easy weekend trip with a camper.

Langebaan is the main draw, a sheltered lagoon that's good for kitesurfing, kayaking, and SUP. Kraalbaai (SANParks, tents only) is one of the best beach camping spots in the country, but for a camper with power, use Langebaan Caravan Park instead. Paternoster is 30 minutes further north. Small fishing village, good seafood restaurants, and crayfish in season, don't miss it. Saldanha Bay has the West Coast Fossil Park and you can buy oysters straight from the farms. Further north, Elands Bay is a proper surf spot with rock art and almost no one around. For spring flowers, drive the R27 or do the Postberg trail in the West Coast National Park (only open during flower season). Good campsites: Langebaan Caravan Park, Duinepos (in the national park), Abraham's Kraal, and Elands Bay Caravan Park. One warning: the West Coast is flat and windy. Secure your awning properly and bring layers for the evening, it cools down fast.
