The Northern Cape is massive, the biggest province in SA and the emptiest. Red Kalahari dunes, the Orange River cutting through ancient rock, and in spring the whole western side explodes with wildflowers. This is where you go for Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (lions on red sand dunes), Augrabies Falls, and Namaqualand. It's remote and you need to plan ahead, fuel stops are far apart and you won't have signal everywhere. But that's the point. Upington is the main rental hub. Kimberley has the Big Hole and diamond-rush history.

Kgalagadi spans the Northern Cape and Botswana, you'll see lions, cheetah, and gemsbok against those red dunes. Twee Rivieren has caravan facilities but book well ahead, especially for winter (June to August) when the game viewing is at its best. Augrabies Falls is where the Orange River drops into a gorge, impressive even when the river is low. Namaqualand west of Springbok turns into a flower carpet after good winter rains (August-September). The Richtersveld is properly remote, succulent desert, 4x4 only, UNESCO World Heritage Site. Upington and Keimoes are popular overnight stops on the Joburg-to-Cape-Town route via the N14.
