Kimberley is one of those towns that still feels like the old South Africa, wide streets, big skies, and the famous Big Hole where the diamond rush started. It sits at the crossroads of routes heading to Namaqualand, the Kalahari, and the Karoo, so it's a natural overnight stop for long-haul caravan trips. The Northern Cape is big and empty, which is exactly the point, dark skies for stargazing, nobody around for miles, proper silence. Kampi lists campers from Northern Cape owners who are used to the province's long distances between towns.

The N12 north goes to Warrenton and eventually the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (5 hours), a proper wilderness drive. The N8 west takes you through Griquatown and on toward Springbok and Namaqualand. South-west on the N10, it's Britstown and then Beaufort West. Don't skip Mokala National Park, just 80km south, it's quiet, has rhino and buffalo, and the caravan facilities are well kept. Kimberley's own caravan parks have power and are handy for an overnight before heading deeper into the province.
