The Cederberg is about three hours north of Cape Town and it feels like another planet. Sandstone formations that look like they were sculpted by something with a sense of humour. San rock art that's been on the walls for thousands of years. Rooibos tea growing wild on the slopes. At night, the stars are absurd, some of the darkest skies in the Western Cape, perfect for sitting outside your camper with a glass of something and just looking up. Bring warm gear: even in summer the nights cool down, and in winter it properly freezes up high. The area is great for hiking, rock climbing, and swimming in rock pools. Summers are extreme though, 40°C+ is normal. Autumn (March-May) and spring (September-November) are the best camping seasons. Come prepared with everything you need. Shops are scarce.

Get in via the N7. Citrusdal from the south or Clanwilliam from the north. Algeria campsite (CapeNature) is the main base, set along a river with trail access right from camp. From there, the Wolfberg Arch hike is the classic, a natural rock bridge that photographs unbelievably well. The Wolfberg Cracks and Maltese Cross are also within reach. Stadsaal Caves have San rock art paintings estimated at 6,000+ years old, worth the detour. For swimming, Beaverlac rock pools near Porterville are hard to beat. Camping options: Algeria (CapeNature, basic but in a great spot), Sanddrif (private, near Wolfberg Arch), Kromrivier (private, decent facilities and good swimming holes). Roads in are all gravel, a 4x4 trailer or off-road caravan is the sensible choice. The Uitkyk Pass is steep and narrow, not a place to be in a big rig. Standard caravans can get to Algeria and Sanddrif in dry weather but should avoid the central mountain crossings.
