About Kampi - South Africa's Camper Rental Platform

Kampi.co.za connects camper owners with renters across South Africa. Over 4,600 trips completed, 365 campers, 245 verified hosts. Free to list, insurance included.

Kampi.co.za is South Africa's peer-to-peer camper rental platform. It connects caravan, trailer, and motorhome owners with people who want to go camping but don't own their own rig.

The platform launched in 2021 and has grown into a national marketplace for private camper rentals, with over 4,600 completed trips, 365 listed campers, and close to 16,000 registered users.

How it works

Retro camper trailer available for rental on Kampi in South Africa

Owners list their caravans, off-road trailers, motorhomes, or 4x4 campers on the platform. They set their own daily rate, availability, and booking terms. Renters search by location, travel dates, camper type, and license requirements, then submit a booking request. The owner has 48 hours to approve or decline.

All bookings include daily insurance cover and 24/7 roadside assistance. Payments are handled through the platform, and both owners and renters go through ID verification before any handover takes place.

The origin story

Kampi started around a braai fire in Pretoria. Founder Jean-Pierre Voogt was looking at the South African camping market and trying to figure out how to get involved. The first plan was to buy a fleet of 4x4 trailers and rent them out directly. It didn't take long to realise that approach had a ceiling.

The pivot: instead of buying a fleet, build a platform. Thousands of South Africans already own caravans and campers that sit unused for 45 or more weeks a year. Give them a way to list those vehicles, handle the insurance and payments, and connect them with renters who need a rig for the weekend or the holidays. That became Kampi.

Platform growth

Since launch, the platform has processed over R28 million in bookings.

The average trip is 6 days long and costs around R6,000. Of the 634 reviews on the platform, 91% are five stars, with an overall average of 4.88 out of 5. Over 630 renters have come back for at least one more booking.

For owners

Listing a camper on Kampi is free. No monthly fees. The platform takes a commission on completed bookings only, and owners receive insurance coverage on every rental.

Daily rates range from under R400 to over R2,500, depending on the vehicle. For most owners, a handful of rentals per year is enough to cover annual maintenance and licensing costs. Everything beyond that is profit.

245 verified hosts currently list campers on the platform. The most active have completed dozens of rentals each.

For renters

Renters search by location, dates, camper type, sleeping capacity, and driver's license type. That last filter matters: drivers who got their license after 1 March 1998 may only hold a Code B, which limits towing to vehicles under 750kg. Over 130 campers on Kampi can be towed with a standard Code B, so no EB endorsement is needed.

Every booking includes insurance and roadside assistance. Renters can read reviews from previous guests, message owners directly, and manage their booking through the platform.

Coverage

Kampi operates across all nine South African provinces, with the highest concentration of campers in Gauteng and the Western Cape. The platform also covers cross-border trips to Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Eswatini, and Lesotho.

Festivals and events

Camper rentals spike around South Africa's festival season. Kampi runs dedicated pages for events like KKNK, Splashy Fen, AfrikaBurn, Rocking the Daisies, Aardklop, Innibos, and NAMPO. March and April alone account for over 1,300 camper bookings each year.
