Kampi and the Worth It Foundation: Camping for a Cause

Kampi partners with the Worth It Foundation to support Iron Men, SHE-Women, stand-in dads, feeding schemes, and annual camping weekends at Buffelspoort.

Who is the Worth It Foundation?

The Worth It Foundation is a South African non-profit that believes every person has value. Not as a slogan, but as something you can actually build a community around.

Most people assume they run a conference or two a year. They don't. WIF operates across eight focus areas, from baby care and feeding schemes through to job creation and elderly care. The full picture is a lot bigger than the name suggests.

What they actually do

The Worth It Foundation covers a lot of ground. Here's what their work looks like:

Under Bediening (Ministry), they run two movements: Iron Men for men and SHE-Women (Strong, Hopeful, Empowered Women) for women. These go well beyond conferences. Both movements work in children's homes and schools, and volunteers act as stand-in dads for boys growing up without fathers. They take them fishing. They braai together. They camp, play sport, and just hang out. For a boy with no father figure, that stuff matters more than any motivational talk.

Their Sport Ontwikkeling (Sports Development) arm includes a fishing club, marathon club, cycling club, and hiking club. The marathon club is open to runners and walkers of all abilities, and registration fees go towards getting underprivileged kids into sports programmes.

Kinder Welsyn (Child Welfare) covers baby care (Babasorg), children's homes, and places of safety. Bejaarde Sorg looks after the elderly through similar places of safety and support.

Werkskepping (Job Creation) runs programmes like Jabari Grondboontjies and youth employment initiatives. Their Entrepreneurs pillar includes Mentor Connect, which pairs new business owners with experienced mentors, and a Juniors programme that gets young people thinking about business early.

Voedingskemas (Feeding Schemes) operates Jabari Kospakkies and Oes Kardoes to get food to families who need it. And their Onderwyser Projek (Teacher Project) supports educators through the Nomineer Jou Onderwyser initiative and the Guide Me App.

Iron Men and SHE-Women

Iron Men focuses on practical stuff: leadership, family, finances, and learning to show up for the people who depend on you. SHE-Women, which stands for Strong, Hopeful, Empowered Women, does the same for women. Both run regular conferences, but the day-to-day work is what counts. They're in children's homes and schools throughout the year.

One thing that stuck with us: both movements actively step in as father figures for boys who don't have one. Volunteers take boys fishing, camp with them, play sport, braai on weekends. It's mentorship that looks like a normal Saturday, and that's the whole point. A kid doesn't need another programme. He needs someone to show up.

The camping weekends at ATKV Buffelspoort

Every year, the Worth It Foundation hosts a camping weekend at ATKV Buffelspoort in the Magaliesberg mountains near Rustenburg. Families arrive with their caravans, the kids disappear to the pool, and the braai fires burn until late. It's about 90 minutes from Johannesburg, so it's easy to get to even for a weekend.

Why Kampi got involved

We make camping accessible. WIF builds communities. There's an obvious overlap when families want to attend the Buffelspoort camping weekend but don't own a caravan or camper trailer. That's where we come in. We provide camper trailers and caravans so the weekend is open to everyone, not just people who already have the gear.

We've also sponsored Iron Men conferences and SHE-Women events. We got involved because this is our community. The camping and overlanding crowd in South Africa cares about family, about doing things properly, and about the people around them. WIF fits right into that.

Beyond the campfire

Eight focus areas. Feeding schemes, job creation, sports clubs, elderly care, teacher support, mentorship for entrepreneurs, and volunteers who show up as father figures for boys who need one. That's the Worth It Foundation.
