Kampi's R89/day insurance covers third-party liability, vehicle damage, theft, and roadside assistance. Powered by Multi Risk Makelaars (FSP 6280).
How insurance works on KampiOne of the first questions renters ask is: "What happens if something goes wrong?" Fair question. You're borrowing someone else's caravan, towing it through places you've never been, and parking it in the bush for a week. Things can happen.
Kampi's insurance is provided through Multi Risk Makelaars (FSP Licence No. 6280), a Pretoria-based short-term insurance brokerage with clients across South Africa. It's not some generic policy slapped on top - it's been structured specifically for peer-to-peer camper rentals.
Insurance on Kampi is charged at R89 per day. That's per rental day, inclusive of both your check-in and check-out dates. So a 5-day trip costs R445 in insurance.
This fee is added to your booking total alongside the rental price and admin fee. It's shown transparently at every stage of the booking process - no surprises at checkout.
Not every camper on Kampi carries this insurance. Owners choose whether to opt into Kampi's insurance programme or use their own coverage ("self-insured"). When browsing campers on Kampi, you'll see the insurance fee in the pricing breakdown if it applies.
Every insured rental includes roadside assistance at no extra cost:
Roadside assistance number: 010 271 3089
This is the part most people skip, and then regret. Read it.
If you make a claim, the excess is R5,000 or 10% of the claim value - whichever is greater. This is deducted from your breakage deposit (R5,000 for domestic rentals, R10,000 for cross-border trips). A R250 processing fee applies to all insurance claims.
In practice: if you have a minor incident costing R8,000 to repair, you'd pay R5,000 excess from your deposit. Insurance covers the remaining R3,000. If the damage is R3,000 or less, it comes out of your deposit and doesn't go through insurance at all.

Multi Risk Makelaars is an approved Financial Services Provider (FSP 6280) based at 547 Rubenstein Drive, Moreleta Park, Pretoria. They're a member of the FIA (Financial Intermediaries Association) and provide short-term insurance to both commercial and personal clients across South Africa.
They're not a household name, and that's fine. They're a specialist broker with the kind of flexibility needed to underwrite a peer-to-peer rental model. The big insurers don't do this - it doesn't fit their standard product boxes. Multi Risk built a policy that works for Kampi's specific use case: private campers rented by verified individuals through a managed platform.
When you browse campers on Kampi, some owners opt into Kampi's insurance programme (R89/day added to your booking) and others use their own coverage. Both options are clearly marked in the listing.
If a camper is self-insured, the owner handles their own insurance arrangements. You'll still pay a breakage deposit, and the owner's own policy will apply. The R89/day fee won't appear in your booking breakdown.
Either way, you're covered. The key difference is who administers the claim - Kampi and Multi Risk (for insured listings) or the owner directly (for self-insured listings).
