Sodwana Bay is where South African divers go when they want the real thing, coral reefs, tropical fish, and warm water, all within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the northern KZN coast). Camp under coastal forest, walk to the beach in flip-flops, and spend your days underwater. The bay has five reef systems (Two Mile, Five Mile, Seven Mile, Nine Mile, Quarter Mile) with diving for every level from first-timers to deep-dive junkies. From November to February, loggerhead and leatherback turtles come ashore to nest, guided night walks to see them lay eggs are something you don't forget. Sodwana is about 5 hours from Durban, which keeps it from getting overcrowded.

The main campsite (Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife) is big, with powered and unpowered sites under shady trees. Clean ablutions, well-run, but it fills up completely during school holidays and dive weekends. Book months ahead for December and Easter, this is not a pitch-up-and-hope destination. Dive boats launch from Jesser Point. Several operators run daily trips , Two Mile Reef is the most popular and has great coral and fish. If you don't dive, snorkel at low tide or take a trip to Lake Sibaya, Africa's largest freshwater coastal lake. The road from Hluhluwe to Sodwana (about 90km) is tarred. The last stretch through the park can be sandy, an off-road trailer handles it better than a standard caravan. Stock up in Hluhluwe or Mtubatuba before you go in; Sodwana's camp shop covers the basics but not much more. While you're in the area, the St Lucia estuary, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, and Mkhuze Game Reserve are all within reach.
