Pietermaritzburg (everyone calls it PMB) is KwaZulu-Natal's capital, tucked into the Msunduzi valley with green midlands hills all around. It's the natural base camp for Drakensberg trips, the KZN Midlands Meander, and the Natal Battlefields. Durban is only an hour down the N3, and Joburg is about 5 hours north. Kampi lists campers from PMB owners whose rigs handle KZN's mix of highways and mountain gravel without any drama. The weather's mild year-round, though winter mornings can be properly cold up in the Berg.
