Polokwane (formerly Pietersburg) is the capital of Limpopo and sits right on the N1, about 3 hours north of Joburg. If you're heading to the northern Kruger gates, the Waterberg, or up toward the Zimbabwe border, you'll probably pass through here. It's a good-sized town with all the big shops for stocking up on supplies. Kampi lists campers from Polokwane owners who know Limpopo's bushveld roads well. The area around town is flat and warm, but head east toward Magoebaskloof and things get green and mountainous fast.

Take the R71 east through Tzaneen (1.5 hours) to reach Phalaborwa Gate into Kruger (2.5 hours). The N1 north goes to Mokopane and then on toward the Limpopo River and the Zimbabwe border. Heading west on the R521 gets you into the Waterberg mountains and Bela-Bela's hot springs. Mapungubwe National Park, a UNESCO Heritage Site, is about 3 hours north and well worth the drive. Mokopane and Marken bushveld camps are closer, about 1.5 hours out.
