BosKampKos makes shake-and-make camping food in South Africa. Pancakes, flapjacks, waffles, hot chocolate. Just add water. On the Kampi Store.
Here is a familiar scene. You are at the campsite, the fire is going, the kids are hungry, and you realise the eggs you packed have cracked all over the cooler box. The milk is warm. Breakfast is now a problem.
BosKampKos fixes this. They make pre-mixed camping food in bottles. Pancakes, flapjacks, waffles, dessert, hot chocolate. You add water, shake, pour, and cook. No eggs. No milk. No measuring. No mess.
BosKampKos is a small South African brand that makes shake-and-make food mixes for camping. Everything comes in a bottle. You add water (and in some cases eggs for extra richness, but water alone works), give it a shake, and you are cooking.
The products do not need refrigeration, which is the actual reason this works so well. They sit in your camping box or trailer cupboard without taking up cooler space. Each bottle makes enough for a family. And they cost between R20 and R75 depending on what you get.
"Kamp kos vir die kamp vuur" is their tagline. Camp food for the campfire. That is exactly what it is.
The first thing you notice is the names. Every product is named after a piece of camping kit. It takes a second to figure out, and that is half the fun.
Slaapsakke means sleeping bags. But this is pancake mix. Add water, shake the bottle, pour onto your pan or flat plate over the fire. Enough for the whole family. If you have camped with kids, you know that pancakes are the one breakfast nobody complains about. This just removes the part where you try to crack eggs with greasy fingers while the dog steals the butter.
The flapjack mix comes in five flavours: Plain, Chocolate, White Chocolate, Caramel, and Hundreds and Thousands. The plain version is on sale at R55 (normally R75). Same deal as the pancakes: add water, shake, pour, cook. The flavoured versions are R75 each.
The Hundreds and Thousands one is worth a special mention. If you are camping with small children, coloured sprinkles in their flapjacks buys you at least 30 minutes of peace.
Grondseile means ground sheets. This is waffle mix. Add water, pour into your waffle iron (the cast iron kind that goes over coals works perfectly), and you have golden waffles in a few minutes. If you already have a waffle iron in your camping kit, this is the obvious pairing. If you do not, this might be the reason to finally get one.
Tentpenne means tent pegs. This one is actually a sweet dessert or treat. Add water, stir, and you have a campfire dessert. Reviews on the website call it "quick, convenient, affordable and delicious." R75 for dessert that does not involve washing a mixing bowl at a campsite tap seems fair.
Hot chocolate. R20. Add hot water, stir, done. On a cold Drakensberg morning or a winter night in the Cederberg, this is the kind of R20 you do not regret spending.
Anyone who has packed for a camping trip knows the cooler box problem. You have limited cold space, and half of it goes to drinks. The other half goes to meat for the braai. There is no room for milk and eggs and flour and all the other things you need for breakfast.
BosKampKos skips all of that. The bottles sit in a dry bag or cupboard. They last for months. When you need food, you add water from your tank or bottle, shake, and cook. The whole process takes less time than arguing about who forgot to pack the spatula.
A few reasons this is especially useful for Kampi renters:
