There is nothing quite like a Kruger trip in your own camper. Nearly 20,000 square kilometres of bushveld across Limpopo and Mpumalanga, Big Five around every bend, and you get to do it at your own pace. Set the alarm for 5am, be at the gate when it opens, and spend the morning creeping along dirt roads looking for cats. By afternoon, you're back at camp with a cold one and boerewors on the braai while the sun drops behind the bushveld. Most Kampi campers near Kruger are based in Nelspruit (Mbombela), White River, and Hoedspruit, collect on your way through. The dry winter months (May-September) are best for game viewing because the bush thins out and animals cluster at waterholes. Summer (November-February) is green and good for birding, but hotter, buggier, and malaria risk goes up.

From the south, enter through Numbi, Phabeni, or Paul Kruger gates. From the central and northern side, Orpen and Phalaborwa are your options. First-timers should head south. Lower Sabie and Skukuza have the highest game density and you'll likely tick off most of the Big Five in a few days. Central Kruger (Satara, Olifants) is lion and cheetah country on open plains. Northern Kruger (Letaba, Mopani, Shingwedzi) is quieter and wilder , worth it if you've been before and want fewer cars on the road. Most rest camps have powered camper sites with braai stands and ablutions. Lower Sabie is the favourite, riverfront sites where you can watch hippos from your camp chair. Satara is flat and spacious. Olifants sits on a hill overlooking the river. Berg-en-Dal has modern facilities and good leopard sightings. Book SANParks campsites early, school holidays and long weekends fill up fast. A standard caravan handles the tarred roads, but a 4x4 trailer opens up the gravel loops and satellite camps like Tamboti and Maroela.
