Tankwa Karoo is not for everyone, and that's the point. No electricity. No cell reception. No light pollution. Just you, the camper, and some of the most dramatic emptiness in South Africa. The park sits between Calvinia and Ceres in a landscape that looks like Mars with better sunsets. Bring everything you need — this is proper off-grid camping. A 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended, especially after rain. Rent a rugged camper on Kampi, load up with water, firewood, and food for your entire stay, and disconnect completely.
The Tankwa Karoo is where AfrikaBurn happens every year, and once you see the landscape you'll understand why — it's otherworldly. The park itself covers over 140,000 hectares of semi-desert with sparse vegetation, rocky outcrops, and dry riverbeds. Wildlife is adapted to the harsh conditions: Karoo scrub-robin, Ludwig's bustard, bat-eared fox, and aardwolf are around if you're patient. The real attraction is the sky — Tankwa is officially one of the darkest places in South Africa, and the Milky Way here will genuinely take your breath away. The R355 from Ceres is scenic but rough in places. Calvinia is the nearest town for fuel and supplies, about 70km from the main camp. Come prepared.

You can, but check your rental agreement for gravel road allowances. The R355 access road is unpaved and can be rough. A hardy off-road trailer or camper is better suited than a large caravan. Book your campsite through SANParks.
No. The campsites have no electrical hookups, no water taps, and no cell reception. You need to be fully self-sufficient — solar panels, water tanks, and enough supplies for your entire stay.
Most people come via the R355 from Ceres (about 3 hours from Cape Town to the park gate). The road is gravel and can be corrugated. From the north, you can access via Calvinia on the R355. Fuel up before you leave tar.
Among the best in South Africa. Zero light pollution, zero cloud cover most of the year, and altitude that puts you closer to the stars. Bring binoculars at minimum — a telescope if you have one.
