Pilanesberg is the closest Big Five game reserve to Gauteng — about 2 hours from Pretoria via the N4 and R556. It sits in an ancient volcanic crater, which gives it unusual bowl-shaped geography and some seriously photogenic landscapes. Unlike Kruger, you can do a proper game drive and be back in Gauteng by dinner. There are camping options at Manyane and Bakgatla camps inside the reserve, plus caravan parks in the surrounding area. Rent a camper on Kampi, drive out for a long weekend, and you'll see elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo, and leopard without the long haul.
Pilanesberg has over 7,000 animals across 55,000 hectares. Self-drive game drives are the main draw — the road network is good and well-signposted. Mankwe Dam is a reliable waterhole for elephant and hippo sightings. The park's volcanic landscape means you get valleys, rocky outcrops, and different vegetation zones all in one reserve. Manyane Resort on the eastern side has caravan stands with power, a pool, and a restaurant. Bakgatla Camp on the northern side is quieter and closer to the bush. Sun City is right next door if you want a day of waterpark, golf, or casinos.

Yes. Manyane Resort and Bakgatla Camp both have caravan sites with electrical hookups inside the reserve. Book your campsite through the Pilanesberg website. Kampi handles the caravan rental.
About 200km, roughly 2.5 hours via the N4. From Pretoria it's closer to 2 hours. The road is tarred all the way.
All of the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo. Plus hippo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, cheetah, and over 300 bird species. Early morning and late afternoon drives are best.
Ideal. It's close enough for a 2-night trip from Gauteng. Drive out Friday afternoon, do game drives Saturday and Sunday morning, and you're home by Sunday evening.
