Namaqua National Park is where South Africa goes to see the wildflower display that makes international news every August and September. Millions of daisies carpeting the Namaqualand veld in orange, yellow, purple, and white — it's one of those things you have to see at least once. The park has basic campsites at Groenrivier on the coast, which is remote, wild, and absolutely stunning. No frills — this is proper wilderness camping. Rent a self-sufficient camper on Kampi with its own water and gas, drive up the N7, and time your trip for the flower season.
The park is split into two sections: the Skilpad section inland (where most of the flower displays happen) and the Groenrivier coastal camp. Skilpad is about 17km from Kamieskroon on a gravel road — manageable in a bakkie with a trailer. The coastal section at Groenrivier is more remote and requires a longer gravel drive, but the reward is wild beaches, rock pools, and camping with the Atlantic crashing in front of you. Outside flower season, the succulent garden is still interesting and the coastal scenery is worth the trip on its own. Kamieskroon is the nearest town for fuel and a few shops, but stock up in Springbok or Citrusdal before you head in.

August to mid-September for the wildflower display. The exact timing depends on winter rainfall — call SANParks or check their flower hotline before driving up. Outside flower season, the coastal camp is still beautiful.
The Groenrivier coastal sites are basic — no electricity, limited water. You need a self-sufficient setup. Access roads are gravel, so smaller campers and off-road trailers work best. Large caravans are not recommended.
About 500km on the N7 to Kamieskroon — roughly 5 hours. Then another 17km on gravel to the Skilpad section. The coastal Groenrivier camp is further. Fill up on fuel at Citrusdal or Clanwilliam.
For the Skilpad wildflower section, a standard vehicle with decent clearance is fine. For the Groenrivier coastal camp, a 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle is recommended, especially after rain.
