Caravan Rental near Mountain Zebra National Park

Mountain Zebra National Park is one of those SANParks gems that flies under the radar — no Big Five queues, no gate traffic, just proper Karoo mountain scenery and the Cape mountain zebra herds the park was built to protect. The rest camp has 20 caravan sites with 220V power, a swimming pool that you'll be grateful for in Karoo summers, and a restaurant. Game drives here feel like the old days of South African parks — quiet roads, unhurried sightings, and sundowners with nobody else around. Rent a camper on Kampi and take the N9 from Graaff-Reinet or the N10 from Port Elizabeth.

About Mountain Zebra National Park

The park protects nearly 30,000 hectares of Karoo and mountain grassland. Cape mountain zebra are the stars, but you'll also find cheetah (reintroduced and thriving), buffalo, black wildebeest, eland, and springbok. The game drive loop takes you through valleys and up onto plateaus with views across the plains to Cradock. The Valley of Desolation near Graaff-Reinet is about 90 minutes away and worth the detour — towering dolerite columns on the edge of the Karoo. Cradock itself is a charming little town with the excellent Die Tuishuise guesthouses and some good restaurants. Bring binoculars — the birding here includes blue cranes, martial eagles, and ground woodpeckers.
