Marakele is the Waterberg's best-kept secret — a Big Five national park in the mountains, only 3 hours from Pretoria. The park sits in the dramatic Waterberg range with rocky peaks, yellowwood forests, and one of the largest Cape vulture colonies in the world (over 800 breeding pairs). Elephant, lion, leopard, rhino, and buffalo are all here. The Tlopi Tented Camp has caravan-friendly sites, and there are private caravan parks outside the gate near Thabazimbi. It's far quieter than Kruger — you might have a waterhole to yourself.
The drive up to Lenong viewpoint inside Marakele is worth it alone — a steep winding road that takes you to a cliff where Cape vultures soar at eye level. The views across the Waterberg are stunning. Self-drive game viewing is best in the Bontle area where there's a dam that attracts elephant and hippo. The park is part of the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO site. Thabazimbi town is 20 minutes from the gate and has shops, fuel, and restaurants. Combine Marakele with a few nights at Warmbaths (Forever Resort Bela-Bela) for a proper Waterberg loop.

Tlopi Tented Camp inside the park has some caravan-friendly stands. There are also private caravan parks near Thabazimbi just outside the park gate. Book well in advance — Marakele is small and fills up.
About 250km — roughly 3 hours via the N1 and R510. The road to the park is tarred. The last stretch to Lenong viewpoint inside the park is gravel and steep — doable but go slow with a caravan.
All Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino (both black and white), and buffalo. Plus the huge Cape vulture colony. Giraffe, kudu, eland, and sable antelope are common. Wild dog have been reintroduced.
For a quick getaway from Gauteng, yes. It's 3 hours vs 5+ for Kruger. Smaller, quieter, and the Waterberg landscape is dramatic. You won't see as much game as Kruger, but you'll have the bush to yourself.
