Berg-en-Dal is Kruger's most modern rest camp, set in the hilly granite country of the far south. The name means 'mountain and valley' in Afrikaans, and the landscape delivers — rocky ridges, thick bush, and the Matjulu Dam right in camp where you can watch animals drink from the viewing deck. The area is great for white rhino, wild dog, and leopard. It's the closest Kruger camp to Gauteng — about 4.5 hours via the N4 and Malelane Gate. Rent a camper on Kampi and you can be in the bush before lunch.
Berg-en-Dal's hilly terrain creates a different Kruger experience. The vegetation is thicker and the birdlife is excellent. Matjulu Dam in camp draws hippo, crocs, and a variety of waterbirds — bring a book and sit on the deck. The Rhino Trail Walk (self-guided) teaches you about the area's geology and wildlife. The roads south toward Malelane and Crocodile Bridge are good for rhino. Afsaal picnic spot between Berg-en-Dal and Skukuza is a lovely lunch stop. The camp has a pool, shop, restaurant, and laundry.

The hilly landscape. It feels different from the flat central Kruger. Matjulu Dam in camp is a highlight — sit on the deck and watch wildlife come to drink. The area is also excellent for wild dog and rhino.
