Caravan Rental for Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

The Kgalagadi is SA's wildest park — 3.6 million hectares of red Kalahari dunes, dry riverbeds, and sparse thorn trees stretching across the Northern Cape into Botswana. This is black-maned lion country. The park is famous for its predators: lion, cheetah, leopard, brown and spotted hyena, and one of the best raptor populations in Africa. Twee Rivieren is the main camp with caravan stands. It's remote — about 900km from Gauteng and 360km from Upington. But that remoteness is the point. The night sky alone is worth the drive.

About Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

The two dry riverbeds — Nossob and Auob — are the game-viewing arteries. Animals concentrate along these riverbeds because that's where the boreholes are. The Nossob road is better for predators; the Auob for general game. Drive slowly and scan the dunes. Lions sleep in the shade of the camel-thorn trees and are often right next to the road. Twee Rivieren, Nossob, and Mata Mata are the three main camps — all have caravan stands. The park is best in winter (dry season) when animals cluster around water. Summer (Dec-Feb) brings extreme heat (45°C) and summer rain, but the Kalahari turns green and the raptors are breeding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take a rented caravan to the Kgalagadi?

Yes. Twee Rivieren, Nossob, and Mata Mata camps all have caravan stands with power. The roads inside the park are sandy gravel — most are fine for a 2WD with a caravan, but some loops need high clearance. Rent a camper on Kampi and plan for at least 4-5 nights.

How far is the Kgalagadi from Johannesburg?

About 900km — roughly 9-10 hours via Upington. Most people break the drive at Upington (360km from Twee Rivieren). It's remote, but the Kalahari landscape on the approach is beautiful in its own way.

What animals will I see in the Kgalagadi?

Black-maned Kalahari lions (the icons), cheetah, leopard, brown and spotted hyena, African wild cat, bat-eared fox, meerkat, gemsbok, springbok, eland, and a spectacular raptor population (martial eagle, secretary bird, pale chanting goshawk).

When is the best time to visit the Kgalagadi?

Winter (June-August). Animals concentrate around waterholes, the bush is thin, and temperatures are bearable (20-25°C days, cold nights). Summer reaches 45°C and is punishing, but the green season brings babies and breeding raptors.
