Golden Gate Highlands National Park is named for the golden sandstone cliffs that glow amber and orange in the late afternoon sun. It's in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains near the Lesotho border, about 4 hours from Gauteng via the N3 and R712. The Glen Reenen rest camp has caravan stands against a backdrop of sandstone formations. Clarens — the 'Jewel of the Free State' — is 20 minutes away with galleries, restaurants, and craft beer. Rent a camper on Kampi for a long weekend of mountain air, easy hikes, and sandstone sunsets.
The Brandwag Buttress is Golden Gate's iconic landmark — a massive sandstone cliff you can hike to (or just admire from Glen Reenen camp). The Ribbok Trail (self-guided, 2-3 hours) takes you through grassland and along the Brandwag base. Vulture Restaurant is a managed feeding site for bearded vultures (endangered — only ~350 in SA). The park has eland, blesbok, black wildebeest, and Bald Ibis nesting on the cliffs. Clarens village is worth a day — art galleries, the Clarens Brewery, and the Saturday market. In winter, there's often snow on the mountains and the landscape is spectacular.

Yes. Glen Reenen rest camp has caravan stands with power hookups, ablution blocks, and braai areas. The setting is stunning — sandstone cliffs on all sides. Book through SANParks.
About 330km — roughly 4 hours via the N3 south and the R712 from Bethlehem. The last stretch through the mountains is beautiful.
A small arty town with galleries, restaurants, craft beer, and a Saturday market. Great for a day trip from Golden Gate. Good coffee, relaxed vibe, mountain views.
Beautiful. The sandstone turns deep orange in low winter light. Snow is possible (June-August). Nights drop below freezing, so bring warm bedding. Days are usually sunny and crisp.
