If you've driven the N1 between Cape Town and Joburg, you've passed the Gariep Dam turnoff and probably thought about stopping. You should. Forever Gariep is right on the waterfront of South Africa's largest dam — 122 caravan sites, 16 of them luxury stands with private ablutions, and views across the water that make you forget you were just on the highway. It's a proper destination in its own right, not just a stopover. Bass fishing is excellent, the restaurant overlooks the dam, and there's a boat launch if you're towing. Rent a camper on Kampi, break your road trip in half, and actually enjoy the drive.
Gariep Dam holds more water than all other SA dams combined — the scale is hard to appreciate until you're standing on the shore. Fishing is the main draw: largemouth bass, yellowfish, and carp are all here. The resort has a boat launch and you can hire ski boats locally. The dam wall itself is worth a visit — there's a viewpoint and information centre. The town of Gariep Dam is small but has fuel, a Spar, and a few restaurants. Heading north, the N1 takes you into the Free State toward Bloemfontein. South leads to Graaff-Reinet and the Valley of Desolation. It's a natural midpoint — roughly 6 hours from both Cape Town and Joburg.

One of the best. It's almost exactly halfway between Cape Town and Joburg on the N1. Instead of pushing through in one brutal 12-hour drive, break it at Gariep and actually enjoy the trip. The turnoff is right off the highway.
122 caravan sites with electrical hookups, 16 luxury stands with private ablution facilities, a waterfront restaurant, pool, boat launch, mini golf, and a kids' playground. Clean communal ablutions with hot water.
Definitely — it's one of the top bass fishing dams in South Africa. Largemouth bass, smallmouth yellowfish, and carp. You can fish from the shore or launch a boat at the resort. Bring your own tackle.
About 6 hours from both Cape Town and Johannesburg on the N1. Bloemfontein is roughly 2.5 hours north, and Graaff-Reinet about 2 hours south. It's the natural halfway point for the CT-JHB drive.
