Dullstroom is the highest town in South Africa and it feels like it — crisp air, rolling grasslands, and the kind of cold that makes you grateful for a proper sleeping bag. It's the trout fishing capital of SA, with fly-fishing dams and streams scattered across the surrounding highlands. But even if you don't fish, the craft breweries, farm stalls, and cosy restaurants make it worth the drive. The caravan park at Dullstroom on the Dam is right on the water — wake up, walk to the dam, cast a line. About 2.5 hours from Joburg via the N4 and R540, it's perfect for a winter weekend escape.
Dullstroom sits at 2,076m above sea level on the Mpumalanga escarpment. The main street is packed with art galleries, antique shops, and restaurants serving hearty food — this is not a salad-and-smoothie town. Wild About Whisky and Anvil Ale House are must-visits for craft drink lovers. Trout fishing is the main outdoor activity — several farms offer day permits for fly fishing on private dams. The Verloren Valei Nature Reserve is nearby for hiking and birding, including the endangered blue crane. In winter, frost is guaranteed and snow isn't unheard of — bring warm gear. Lydenburg is 30 minutes down the escarpment for fuel and supplies.

Great for it, especially if you like your camping with a side of trout fishing and craft beer. Dullstroom on the Dam has caravan sites right on the water. Just be prepared for cold — it's the highest town in SA and winter nights drop well below zero.
About 250km — roughly 2.5 hours via the N4 through Middelburg and then the R540 up the escarpment. The R540 is winding but scenic. Take it easy with a caravan on the bends.
Craft breweries (Anvil Ale House is excellent), whisky tasting, art galleries, antique shopping, and proper comfort food restaurants. The Bird of Prey Centre and Verloren Valei Nature Reserve are nearby for outdoor activities.
Properly cold. Winter nights drop to -5°C or lower, and frost is a daily occurrence from May to August. Snow falls occasionally. Bring warm bedding, a gas heater, and expect to see your breath in the morning.
