Dinokeng Game Reserve is the only free-roaming Big 5 reserve in Gauteng, and it sits just 40 minutes north of Pretoria near Hammanskraal. The reserve covers about 21,000 hectares across rolling bushveld, and the best part is that it's malaria-free. Several campsites operate inside the reserve, including Almega Caravan Park and Koedoesrus Boskamp, all with power points and ablution facilities. Pick up a camper on Kampi from a Gauteng-based owner and you could be watching elephants from your camp chair before dinner.
Dinokeng opened in 2011 as a public-private partnership between landowners and the Gauteng government. Today it holds all of the Big 5: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino, along with cheetah, giraffe, hippo, and over 300 bird species. Self-drive game viewing routes wind through the reserve, and several lodges offer guided day and night drives if you want a ranger's eye on the bush. There's a sunset boat cruise on the dam, bass fishing in designated areas, and bush walks with experienced guides. Campsites inside the reserve range from basic bush camps to proper caravan stands with private bathrooms. Almega Caravan Park has large stands, Willem's Rus offers 24 sites, and Kudu Bush Camp has 8 campsites with their own facilities. Most stands have power hookups and braai areas. The Carousel Casino is close to the southern entrance for a change of scenery, and the Tswaing Meteor Crater is a 40-minute drive south. For supplies, Hammanskraal has grocery stores and fuel.
